No Incorrect Literature.
A member of this Church shall neither buy, sell, nor circulate Christian Science literature which is not correct in its statement of the divine Principle and rules and the demonstration of Christian Science. Also the spirit in which the writer has written his literature shall be definitely considered. His writings must show strict adherence to the Golden Rule, or his literature shall not be adjudged Christian Science. A departure from the spirit or letter of this By-Law involves schisms in our Church and the possible loss, for a time, of Christian Science.
Mary Baker Eddy,
Manual of The Mother Church, Article VIII, Section 11
Several articles and editorials have been written explaining why homosexuals cannot be admitted to membership. One of these I wrote myself, the title: “Homosexuality Can Be Healed.” All I can say in defense of myself for writing it is that it was based on information I thought was authentic, but which later was disproved by further studies. If I were to write another article on the subject now, I would probably entitle it, “We’re ALL God’s Children.”

I [CSB] was asked/told by the Church to write that antigay blog [posted several years ago on time4thinkers] supporting reparative therapy ( “at issue is reparative therapy “).
The blog was later removed by the CSPS as it was found harmful to those struggling with “equality”. But, what about the other outdated, antigay articles currently causing harm posted on JSH Online?
Would Mrs. Eddy support those articles according to her statement in the Manual (above)? They are neither timeless nor universal and go against the grain of Christian Science and the The Golden Rule. It’s hate speech that needs to be challenged.
The Senior Researcher for the Mary Baker Eddy Library stated in a workshop at Midwest Church Alive 2014 that there is nothing in Mrs. Eddy’s writings supporting those antigay articles.
One member then stood up and recited the statement: “Inverted and subverted” from Mrs. Eddy’s writings during a workshop. This was then immediately debunked by the Senior Researcher of the MBE Library because it was not what Mrs. Eddy meant in the context of her writing. Homosexuality was associated with those words from psychiatrists in the 1970’s.
I also remember turning around and looking at the face of this woman who stood and brought this up. Her face was bright red, full of anger and seemed aged beyond her years. I thought this is why forgiveness is so important as I work out my own salvation because I don’t want to end up bitter like her.
Rob, The Church must atone for its sin to people of color (1926-1955) as well as its ongoing sin of exclusion and discrimination toward the LGBT community and read seriously what Mrs. Eddy wrote about the essence of identity, and what Jesus pointed toward in Matthew 19:12 that social and gender conditions are things we should observe but not judge. If we apologize not for our past and present “hardness of heart” any article lacks meaning.

Video – Published on May 1, 2017 – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday left intact California’s ban on “gay conversion” therapy aimed at turning youths under age 18 away from homosexuality, rejecting a Christian minister’s challenge to the law asserting it violates religious rights. The justices, turning away a challenge to the 2012 law for the second time in three years, let stand a lower court’s ruling that it was constitutional and neither impinged upon free exercise of religion nor impacted the activities of clergy members. The law prohibits state-licensed mental health counselors, including psychologists and social workers, from offering therapy to change sexual orientation in minors.
