Friend

FRIEND

All call him friend,
This man who never
seeks
Acclaim for word or deed;
Who never turns a deafened ear
To those who seem in need.
A man who never speaks of
men
Unless he can commend,
But never leaves unsaid the
words
That urge an upward trend.
.
He stands not in the market
place
That all may see and hear;
His one desire, to bring the light
To those enslaved by fear.
.
No! Fame is not his goal;
With himself plays no part;
Yet none forget the day
They look within his heart.
.
Yes, such a one is—friend.
